Esther Hayward

BSc Midwifery, 2016

FORMER PRESIDENT, UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH MIDWIFERY SOCIETY

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Greenwich and felt so supported which gave me the confidence to see this journey through the blood, sweat and tears to the glorious end.”

Mother-of-three Esther Hayward has a passion for providing women with the chance to have the birth of their choice. Inspired by her experience working with midwives at a birth centre, Esther joined the university’s Midwifery degree programme in 2013.

She says: “My last child arrived just before I started my degree. Through personal experience I realised that we harp on about mothers having informed choice, but only give lower-risk women all the choices. Mothers should be given all the information, then it is up to them to decide.”

Keen to bring interesting speakers to Greenwich and explore her subject further, she joined forces with other students to found the university’s Midwifery Society, becoming its first President in 2014.

It has been a great success: “After much planning and anxiety we had a really good launch event. We were proud of the turnout we got from students and midwives across London.

“Since then we have held stalls at fresher’s week, had birthing film nights and discussion forums which have been well received. It has opened new paths, expanding on our degree programme.”

Esther finished her degree in March 2016 and has now begun her new career as a midwife at Queen’s Hospital, Romford.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Greenwich and felt so supported which gave me the confidence to see this journey through the blood, sweat and tears to the glorious end.”

“Thank you Greenwich for an amazing three years!”
