Wilson Leech

HND Business Studies, 1983 | HonDUniv, 2010

CEO EMEA, NORTHERN TRUST

“The University of Greenwich has all the great qualities it always had, in a better location and with much better facilities than in my day!”

As Chief Executive Officer, Wilson is accountable for driving the growth of Northern Trust’s business in the EMEA region. In this capacity he oversees the asset servicing, asset management and wealth management businesses; in aggregate, over 650 clients are serviced in the region by nearly 3,000 employees, with assets under custody and administration measured in trillions of dollars.

Wilson attributes a large part of his career success to his time spent studying at Thames Polytechnic, a predecessor institution to the University of Greenwich. As a teenager Wilson’s education was severely disrupted by being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and having to spend extended time in hospital. Underperforming in his A-levels as a result of ill health, Wilson enrolled on a HND in Business Studies at Thames Polytechnic.

“I am extremely grateful to Thames Polytechnic as they got me back on track educationally after a difficult time and this has undoubtedly provided the foundation for my career. The quality of the teaching was tremendous, inspirational teachers who really cared about their students. Going on to study for my professional accountancy exams I was way ahead of students from other courses.”

Wilson is keen to ensure that today’s students get the opportunities he had and has given back to the University of Greenwich as both a member of the Board of Governors and Chair of the Business School Advisory Board.

He is passionate about ensuring students feel they too can make a career for themselves in the City and has been instrumental in the development of the Business School mentoring programme. To date over 150 Northern Trust employees have volunteered as mentors for students at the Business School.

“Thames Polytechnic got me back on track educationally after a difficult time. The quality of the teaching was tremendous, inspirational teachers who really cared about their students.”
