The university’s biggest sporting event of the year comes to Avery Hill this week, with the return of Varsity.
Varsity is an annual inter-campus festival of sport, pitting Team Greenwich against Team Medway across a range of games. First held in 2013, it has quickly become an eagerly anticipated fixture in the university calendar.
This year the teams will compete across nine games for the Varsity champions trophy – and bragging rights for the next 12 months.
A new home for #TeamGreenwich
This year’s Varsity runs alongside the official opening of two new sports pitches at Avery Hill, which will stage several of the matches.
They will help student clubs increase their membership and teams, train at more convenient times and largely end their dependence on outside venues.
3G Sports Pitches in numbers
Tight contests and thrilling finishes have been a feature every year so far, with the overall result usually in the balance right up to the final match. Honours are currently even, at one win apiece and two draws.
More Sports. More Choice.
Team Greenwich and Team Medway now have 20 sports clubs apiece, catering for all levels and covering not just high profile sports such as football and netball but the likes of archery, polo and ultimate frisbee.
Varsity 2017 takes place on 29 March. We’d love to see alumni, staff and students there as battle commences. Visit the Varsity web pages for details of the schedule and locations.
Nine games, 18 teams, one winner. Who will come out on top this time?
