Former Greenwich student Sir Charles Kao – ‘father of fibre optics’, dies age 84

We are sad to announce the death of Sir Charles Kuen Kao, one of our most outstanding and influential alumni.

Sir Charles died in September this year in Hong Kong. He was 84.

He revolutionised the field of fibre optics and helped lay the technical groundwork for the information age.

His work “made the internet possible,” The South China Morning Post newspaper said in an editorial.

We are honoured to have Sir Charles as one of our Greenwich Portraits.

‘Sir Charles Kao was one of our most distinguished alumni.  The time spent studying with us was clearly a key influence on his life and work.  We are proud of everything he has achieved and our part in his many superb accomplishments.’
