Memories of Greenwich 

The Old Royal Naval College campus became part of University of Greenwich during my time at university. I didn’t have a chance to study there but I paid a visit to the campus when I revisited London in 2022. I also especially enjoyed “Tai Won Mein” noodles in the town centre.

I enjoyed the time with my course mates spent in the library, on campus to discuss assignments, and when we visited sites such as hotels for our projects. As I lived on campus, we had a shared kitchen where we got to cook together and enjoy each other’s dishes and laugh together. This is the memory I miss the most.

Greenwich offered a twinning programme for Malaysians, and I spent one year studying in Malaysia followed by two years in the UK. It provided time for me to adjust to the UK programme in an environment that I was familiar with before continuing my second and third years at Greenwich.

In addition, the courses offered in the programme were very relevant, useful not just for Quantity Surveying but other construction management courses as well. We had many great lecturers who taught the subjects well and were there to support us when we had questions. I grew my interest in subjects such as legal studies, and construction law and arbitration. This made me appreciate the importance of risk management as well.

Life after Greenwich 

The knowledge that I gained in university formed a strong foundation for my career in the construction industry as a Quantity Surveyor and supported my career expansion into the corporate world as a procurement professional. My latter roles have required strong cost management as well as sourcing and contracting skillsets.

I have always believed that technology is the enabler of future innovation. My dissertation on “Does the application of Information Technology in Quantity Surveying pose a threat or an opportunity?” continues to be a relevant topic in today’s world. As I become more involved in procurement transformation, I continue to enable technology to unlock the limitless opportunities in the corporate world.

Other than academic relevance, I was thankful for the leadership programme provided by the Students’ Union when I took on the secretary role for Chinese Society at university. The project-based structure also taught me to embrace important values such as teamwork and respect the diverse culture of teams.
