Memories of Greenwich 

It was the fellow students and lecturers that I loved most about my time at Greenwich. In a world where it can be difficult to pinpoint the preferred direction of your career there was an immediate camaraderie amongst all of us that endeavoured to not only discover the specialties we enjoyed most, but how to take realistic steps towards achieving that goal. I feel lucky to have been taught by such motivated and earnest people, while simultaneously working alongside some incredibly diligent and inspiring friends.

It took a single open day at the University of Greenwich to fall in love with both the course and the location. The lecturers were extremely candid and passionate which made me feel eager to learn from them. I have since made friends that I keep in contact with to this day and I still occasionally speak with my former lecturers who I had nothing but positive interactions with.

My course acted as the spark to pique my curiosity in to the world of programming and was invaluable in helping me build the necessary knowledge required to enter as an entry level programmer in the video game industry – which was my ideal outcome.

Life after Greenwich 

This picture was taken during celebrations of my promotion to Senior Client-Side Engineer at Mediatonic. Having initially started my video game industry career in the field of quality assurance and working my way to the level of senior it was quite intimidating when making the decision to instead become a junior programmer. Over four years on from that decision I am still the happiest I’ve ever been.

I finished my degree with an initial focus on video game design and programming, and was torn on which of these paths I wanted to make a career out of. In the interim I was lucky enough to land a job as a quality assurance tester at the video game developer Rocksteady Studios. Throughout my first year at Rocksteady, I gained an invaluable understanding of the professional processes that are required to produce a high-quality video games, particularly for consoles and PC.

Afterwards I joined the developer NaturalMotion where I expanded my knowledge to the mobile space, before later returning to Rocksteady to work on the initial stages of their latest titles.

Eventually I made the decision to specialise as a video game programmer (which is where my degree was incredibly important for teaching me how to write code as well as other relevant skills) and was employed by Mediatonic. This is where I currently work and where I plan to stay as they have been amazing at empowering me to become the best video game programmer that I can be.
