Shabina Begum is a family lawyer and human rights activist, known for her campaigning to eradicate domestic violence and halt the growing incidence of acid attacks.
Still only 29, she has spoken at the UN Commission on the Status of Women on developing an Islamic approach to combating domestic violence, and ending early and forced marriage. She speaks at other international forums on topics related to women’s empowerment and ending gender-based violence.
Shabina was called to the Bar in 2009 and admitted as a solicitor in 2013. She is currently Assistant Solicitor at Dawson Cornwell, specialising in divorce, children disputes, domestic and honour based violence, forced marriage, stranded spouse and FGM matters. She has expertise in Sharia law: both family law and Islamic financing.
She has worked as an Independent Domestic Violence Advocate handling high risk cases and extremely vulnerable clients, undertaken pro bono work for Women’s Aid organisations and volunteered for a range of charities tackling poverty.
In 2012 the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust awarded her a travel fellowship to conduct legal research on acid violence in Sri Lanka, Cambodia and India, which was recognised with a Churchill Fellow Medallion. She was included in the ‘top 100 influential British Bangladeshis in the UK’ by the British Bangladeshi Power and Inspiration Awards in 2014.
Shabina is an active member of the Greenwich Law Alumni Network, sharing her experience with current students.

Since taking part in Greenwich Portraits, Shabina has further cemented herself as a pioneer in her field. In July 2020 Shabina was recognised by Management Today as one of their ‘35 Women Under 35 2020: Britain’s brightest young business leaders‘. Shabina also won the Business Award at the Women in Future Awards 2020. Having been shortlisted the previous year, Shabina beat off stiff competition for the award, which was announced in February 2021.
