Bhavnesh Thanki

BSc Economics, 2018

FORMER PRESIDENT, TRADING AND INVESTMENT SOCIETY | CHAIR, HOCKEY CLUB

“There are so many opportunities at Greenwich, so you need to look at how to get ahead and connect with other people. I would tell students to take advantage of the experiences available.”

Troughout his time at Greenwich Bhav has maximised every opportunity the university has to offer. As an active member of the Students’ Union, Bhav holds not one but two student leadership roles as President of the Trading and Investment Society and Chair of the Hockey Club.

Not one to be afraid of new challenges, Bhav did not take up hockey until he came to Greenwich but is extremely passionate about his sport. In his second year, Bhav quickly stepped up into a leadership role and led the club to two successive promotions for the women’s and men’s team.

In addition to his Students’ Union commitments, Bhav has also taken full advantage of the employment development opportunities provided by the Business School. In his first year, he participated in the mentoring scheme, which led to two internships with Northern Trust. Its Chief Risk Officer is alumnus and fellow Greenwich Portraits subject Wilson Leech, who was instrumental in developing its ties to the university.

As President of the Trading and Investment Society, Bhav has helped his peers successfully compete at competitions including the annual University Trading Challenge. Since 2010, teams have consistently won a different prize each year, and 2017 was no exception, with two students winning awards.

Bhav feels the university is preparing him for the challenges ahead: “There are so many opportunities at Greenwich, so you need to look at how to get ahead and connect with other people. I would tell students to take advantage of the experiences available.”
