Louis Hale

BSc Computing, 2016

FORMER PRESIDENT, GREENWICH MARINERS

“What I’ve learned from being at the University of Greenwich is that I should strive to do something rather than be someone. Standing for VP evolved as the way to do what I love, not from having a list of things to achieve.”

Louis Hale transformed the fortunes of university American Football team Greenwich Mariners when he was President 2015.

He likes the way American Football combines brawn and brain: “It’s like chess. It requires finesse. You need to work, and trust your team.”

Greenwich Mariners is a family. “It’s a massive brotherhood,” says Louis. “We depend on each other on the pitch and take that into our everyday lives.”

Louis (22) learned about leadership, trust and teamwork in the Sea Cadets. He joined the national youth organisation which is sponsored by the Royal Navy as a 13-year-old. After benefiting from the development opportunities himself, he has been a Training Officer for his local unit since he was 18, teaching teenagers skills in seafaring, camouflage and survival.

The cadets identified him as a leader and he has since won numerous awards including a place on the US Embassy’s “Young Leaders UK” programme.

Louis is also the former Students’ Union Vice President (VP) for Student Activities. He embedded the ‘full Greenwich experience’ packed with social and development opportunities beyond the classroom.

“What I’ve learned from being at the University of Greenwich is that I should strive to do something rather than be someone. Standing for VP evolved as the way to do what I love, not from having a list of things to achieve.”

“The people I see every day at university are highly engaged. They encourage you to work hard and discover the direction that’s right for you.”

“It’s like being a rough pebble rolling along. Every person you meet knocks off a chip until you’re smooth. The process can be tough, but transformative!”
