“Greenwich is so beautiful, it’s the best area in London. In terms of location, people and student experience you would never want to leave… I have made friends for life.”
Mohamed arrived in the UK from Iraq as a refugee in 2009. While at Croydon College, Mohamed trained with the Ovalhouse Theatre, becoming a founding artist in ‘The Paper Project’, a collaboration between the theatre and Counterpoints Arts exploring the experiences of migrants and refugees.
This helped sow the seeds for Mohamed’s engagement as an activist and student leader. He has won two UNICEF Platinum awards and a Volunteer of the Year award from the Borough of Croydon in recognition of his work in the community. “I’m very passionate about helping other people”.
This continues at Greenwich where he is a Resident’s Assistant in Devonport House, set up the university’s branch of Student Action for Refugees and founded the GreDevJams Society.
However, it has always been Mohamed’s dream to study Computer Science, which he is grateful to be realising here at Greenwich. “In terms of staff, my department are the best… they are always here to help”.
Through the support of his supervisor and faculty, Mohamed plans to continue his education at Greenwich before a career as a data scientist. This will please his father, one of the biggest inspirations on his life. “He loves education, so if I tell him I’m doing a PhD he will be like ‘Yes!’. To do that would be a dream come true for him”.
Since leaving Greenwich Mohamad works as a Data Engineering Associate Consultant at 6point6. He is also a Trustee of Compass Collective.
